After Exchange - Kolab: An OSS Groupware Solution
With Steffen Hansen and Matthias Kalle Dalheimer, KDAB
In this talk, we will present the concepts, advantages, and implementation ideas of the Kolab Groupware Solution. The first part will present the OSS components the Kolab server consists of, and how the Kolab server has been designed for scalability and extensibility. We will show how the IMAP protocol is used for both ordinary email messages and calendaring, contact, and other Groupware data and discuss how some particularly difficult problems in the Groupware world like Shared Folders are solved.
In the second part, we will present the Kolab client reference implementation, the KDE client contact, as well as how to make MS Outlook work with Kolab for those who insist on working with Windows and Outlook, but still want to get out of the Exchange trap. We will also briefly look at the current two existing web email clients for Kolab, SquirrelMail and Horde, and at future plans on the client-side, including a port of Kontact to Windows and a newly developed web email client.
